DIY Shutter Mail Organizer

I’m not doing a very good job of getting back to this blogging thing!  But I have been busy with some things around the house and I think it will be fun to share some of them here.  I have been thinking about making one of these DIY shutter mail organizers since before we moved into our house.  I’ve seen a couple in stores and knew it would be something super easy to make out of a real shutter, instead of spending $25+ on one from the store.  My mother-in-law was nice enough to give me an old shutter she had laying around in her garage a few weeks ago and I am sooo happy with how this project turned out!

Please excuse the not-so-great quality pictures that are from my phone!
This is how the shutter looked before I painted it (but not before I wiped the spider webs, old dirt, etc. off it). I also used some sandpaper to sand off any splintering pieces and rough spots.
Next, I gave the shutter a thin coat of this awesome stuff I found at Home Depot.  It doesn’t require ANY priming or sanding!  If you want a perfectly finished looking piece of painted furniture, this might not be the best choice, but for me it was perfect.  I wanted an old, antique-y look and this gave me just that.  The color choices in the store were limited but there are more online.
This is how the shutter looked after one coat of paint.  I gave it 3 thin coats all together.

Next, I cut cardboard to fit in the back of the shutter, so that mail and paper wouldn’t fall through the slats.  Then, I used hot glue to glue the cardboard down.  Make sure you put glue on each slat, otherwise thin paper and mail will slip through.
I put three of these sawtoothed hangers on the back of the shutter to hang it up with.
I am so in love with this addition to my kitchen!  I am excited for this holiday season when I can use it to hang Christmas cards!
