Mocha Chocolate Chip Donuts

Why do coffee and donuts go so well together? I got the idea for these Mocha Chocolate Chip Donuts from a donut shop my fiancé and I always go to when we stay at his family’s place in Ocean City, MD.  It is called The Fractured Prune Doughnut Shoppe and their donuts are amazing.  My absolute favorite donut that I get there is called the “Morning Buzz.”  First it is dipped in mocha glaze, then Oreo cookie crumbles.  Just thinking about it makes me drool!  

When I set out to create a donut that would come close to the “Morning Buzz” I did not expect to create something would taste so delicious but be so easy at the same time.    I fried up some store-bought, flaky biscuits and whipped up a super simple homemade glaze and voila, I got these delicious Mocha Chocolate Chip Donuts.  I’m giving my first attempt at semi-homemade donuts two thumbs up. 


Ingredients:
DONUTS
– 1 can pre-made biscuit dough like Pillsbury Grands (that makes 8 biscuits)
– 1 1/2 cups vegetable oil
MOCHA GLAZE AND CHOCOLATE CHIP TOPPING
– 1/2 cup powdered sugar
– 1 tsp unsweetened cocoa powder
– 1/2 tsp instant coffee granules
– 4 tsp hot water
– 1/2 tsp vanilla
– 1/3 cup mini chocolate chips

Directions:
1. Combine powdered sugar and cocoa in a small bowl.  In another bowl, dissolve instant coffee in the hot water, then mix into the powdered sugar and cocoa.  Add in the vanilla and stir well.  Set aside.
2 Flatten out your biscuits a little bit, then using a small circular cookie cutter or a knife, cut small holes out of the center of each one and set aside to make donut holes with!
3. Heat up your vegetable oil in a large skillet and heat on medium-high until you see small bubbles start to form.
4. Carefully put in 2-3 donuts at a time and fry for about 2 minutes on each side, or until golden brown, using tongs to turn over. Remove with tongs and set on several layers of paper towels to cool and remove excess oil. Repeat until all donuts are fried. 
6. Using a spoon, drizzle the mocha glaze over the donuts while they are still warm then sprinkle the mini chocolate chips on top.
